Reading for pleasure
‘Reading for pleasure’ is promoted through various activities and events throughout the year at school. We hold Book at Bedtime events with parents; celebrate World Book Day; invite authors to visit our pupils and we have our wonderful school library. We also run reading challenges, book quizzes in classroom and have a wonderful team of Reading Ambassadors who share their love of reading with others during breaks and lunchtimes.
We also have reading areas in every classroom, regular class story times and reading for pleasure sessions (both in KS1 and KS2) which encourage a love of reading.
Books for our reading areas and class reading sessions are chosen to introduce and allow children to enjoy a growing range of texts. An important reason for this is to give children access to a wider range of titles, authors and genres that they might otherwise meet. Books chosen for our reading areas and story time would include:
texts that are multi layered
capable of being read at different levels
books that deal with important themes
books in which language is used in lively, inventive ways
books by skilful and experienced children's writers and illustrators traditional and contemporary 'classics' of children's literature
stories with different cultural setting
texts that promotes discussion
